The Future of Tires.......Tweels

Thanks Rusty for the info DIGG THIS

Go To Another GREAT Story

These tires are airless and are scheduled to be out on the market very soon .

The bad news for law enforcement is that spike strips will not work on these tires.

This is what great R&D will do, and just think of the impact on existing technology:

a... no more air valves
a... no more air compressors at gas stations
a... no more repair kits

SCAN DOWN & SEE.

These are actual pictures taken in the South Carolina plant of Michelin

Great idea... lets see some video of it being tested.

This was actually developed many, many

This was actually developed many, many years ago by another company.

It was inferior to the pneumatic tire back then and still is today.

Ingenious idea, very cool, but I think

Ingenious idea, very cool, but I think they will have to cover the sides of these for safety reasons. Wait until some person gets a peice of clothing caught in one of these. Or someone's grandma closes the back door on her scarf and it gets pulled into the tweel. Next thing you know grandma's head pops off. That would suck.

These will be perfect for bank robbers

These will be perfect for bank robbers - nothing like a flat tire to buzz kill your heist getaway.

I wonder what the ride is like? I mean, for after the robbery and it's time to go have dinner.

Thanks for covering this!

Didn't we see these in the news a while

Didn't we see these in the news a while back? I seem to remember that they were going to be primarily for military use since they were too noisy on the roadway for normal folks to tolerate. Personally I like my car quiet.

Still a cool concept though.

The design shown does not look like it

The design shown does not look like it will not work on existing wheels and thus limit the up-take to only new cars with the new tweel wheels. The design should be modified so that the tweel can be retrofitted onto exisiting pnuematic wheels. It might also be more accepted if there were cosmetic sidewalls.

What do these do to you gas

What do these do to you gas milage?

I wonder about fatigue in the spokes as

I wonder about fatigue in the spokes as the tires age. Other downsides? You can't adjust the pressure, as if that matters. Would they fill up with snow and ice? There's no air lobby or special interest group protecting the idea of pneumatic tires, so no real opposition.

I wonder how the centrifigal force at

I wonder how the centrifigal force at speed would expand the tire versus conventional radials. Or for that matter, the torque at initial acceleration.

What happens when you use the breaks

What happens when you use the breaks and the gravity center of the car modifies?

That looks pretty good, but what if a

That looks pretty good, but what if a "prankster" cuts two or three of those spokes? I figure the retail version will have the sides covered, just like the regular ones we use now.

If it is the case that they are flexible enough to not be extremely brittle on the road, then aren't they likely to provide mushy handling??

Ever been in a car with unbalanced tires? Not fun.

a little dated : DETROIT, M.I. (January 9, 2005) – Today at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) Michelin showcased a potential future for mobility, an integrated tire and wheel combination missing one ingredient that is vital for traditional tire performance...air. The company unveiled the first real-world fitments for its revolutionary "Tweel" – which operates entirely without air. View the photo gallery.

Cool. You've been

Um... What happens with tire tread? I mean wear and tear? You have to buy a whole new tweel?

Here's another video that says they're 10-15 years away from these being on our cars:

OK, am I the only one who thinks that

OK, am I the only one who thinks that tweels are the ugliest thing since google video?

I think these have the potential to be

I think these have the potential to be really useful for a number of reasons. If the noise can be managed (and it probably can) then you've got thousands of different uses here. It would be cool to not have to worry if my wife it going to blow a tire on our truck, besides, I think it would be very cool to look at.

Y'all with the 20 inch rims already give up a tremendous amount of ride quality with the low profile tires so you can look properly "gangsta", I don't imagine that this would stop you at all. Just add a little bling into the spoke, and you're hooked up.

If you think about it, all the points

If you think about it, all the points made can also be made about regular tires. They both have strong points, both have weak points. Someone slashing the spokes? Some as someone slashing a tire. I think these are good. They eliminate the biggest problem with regular tires.....FLATS. Everything else, tread, etc, has the same problems.

Hurray! I'd be willing to invest in

Hurray! I'd be willing to invest in these, and sleep well knowing I wont have to wake up to a slashed tire ever again.

Good concept Michelin, keep it rollin.

Good concept Michelin, keep it rollin. Look how many years it took to get a great air tire. Ya gotta start somewhere. Does the ride change with less tread thickness since the tread thickness appears to be an essential part of the "ride".

This was first shown at detroit 2005.

This was first shown at detroit 2005. It was never put into production because they did not want to spend all that money just to make a tire that only the military would buy. But then the Army armored its Humvees and they became too heavy for the tweel. think about it, the air pressure inside a tire allows it to support a lot of weight.

"But for the car, the tweel is still just a concept.

On a test drive on tweels, a sedan handles well enough. The biggest problem is noise, once the speed hits about 50 mph. The noise gets worse the faster you go. "

NOISE on highway is already too much
but nice concept

Someone anonymous made the comment

Someone anonymous made the comment about snow - I've got to agree that these would be, as they are, a bad idea in the snow. They'de probably work if they were covered. But being from Coastal Maine, can't say that I'd want em' in our winters.

OK, am I the only one who thinks that

OK, am I the only one who thinks that tweels are the ugliest thing since google video?

Agreed! They are even uglier than those space saver wheels.

Great concept but up here in Canada

Great concept but up here in Canada (and many parts of the USA) the snow will drift into the openings or worse road-dirt and mud. This will cause a major imbalance issue unless the sides are covered in.

You guys are all dumbasses of course

You guys are all dumbasses of course the sides would be covered in a final product, they are only open like that so you can see what it is.

of course the final product would have a sidewall.

Thanks for the post. Very interesting

Thanks for the post. Very interesting technology. Can't wait for it. Hopefully this will reduce tractor trailer tire blowups, I recenetly had one blow-out next to me and the rubber came flying across the road.

Mandating tire pressure gauges on truck

Mandating tire pressure gauges on truck tires is feasible as the technology is already available . Running at the correct pressure gets greater mileage and wear. It also avoids blow-outs.

A guy was killed in the last couple on months near here after being caught up in a blow out situation

How are you gonna pick up chicks with

How are you gonna pick up chicks with THOSE funny lookin' things?

The concept is cool but there are

The concept is cool but there are downsides you have to look at like changing tire preassure for when your hauling a heavy load or if you want a smooth ride with no load how are they going to hold up against time and are they backwards compatible with old rims there's still a lot to look at.

What happens if you have consumed a tin

What happens if you have consumed a tin of baked beans at 3:48pm and when travelling at 63.57mph at 7:39pm you apply the brakes and while doing so you break wind, what effect would this have on your overall braking distance?

good idea which have to keep on going.

good idea which have to keep on going. nothing was perfect from the first time.remember first cars, computers, watches, trains, internet, etc. it has to start with something, and experience/usage is the only way to improve it.
