Now THIS is a Blizzard!!!
You think you know snow? If you're like me, a good 12" snow here in the Midwest shuts us down and leaves us digging out for a few days. Now imagine 10 times that amount with 4 more feet coming and that leaves you with the amazing photos below
Doesn't look like much except there are three cars in the drive

Now they've dug out and here come 4 more feet
Here is one picture on another site I thought was funny

Luckily I am 60 miles south of this area and only got 6 inches of snow this time, but in the past I been able to go sledding off the roofs of houses and barns!! Jumping off the roof of the house and into the snow is also fun.
Although this area is very close to the lake and accustom to snow, most of the snow usually passes right over and dumps to the east...

heheh global warming.. it seems that all the cold from here is over there...LOOL. This was the hottest winter, not snow at all here in Romania. First time like this. Succes s with our winter. Thank Heaven for Global Warming :P it is a lot better

Please don't misinform the public.
Please don't misinform the public. While this was an amazing snowfall, it never had anywhere near the winds necessary to be called a blizzard.
From the National Weather Service:
A blizzard is the combination of cold temperatures, strong winds, and poor visibility due to blowing snow. Specifically, National Weather Service Forecast Office issues a blizzard warning when the following conditions are expected to occur for 3 hours or more:
1) Sustained wind speeds of 35 mph or more, or frequent gusts to 35 mph or greater;
2) Considerable falling and/or blowing snow that reduces visibility frequently to 1/4 mile or less.

FYI: Global warming would eventually lead to an ice age. And despite the name it doesn't mean that it's going to be warmer everywhere, just that weather will be more extreme (see above photos).
Actually the mild winter is somewhat to
Actually the mild winter is somewhat to blame. Due to the above average temps in December and January the great lakes don't freeze as much as they should and when you get that first artic blast it picks up a lot more moisture from the unfrozen lake than it normally would. Hence, 8' of snow.
Nice sarcasm, pity you understand
Nice sarcasm, pity you understand nothing about global warming. This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that can be caused by global warming. Perhaps before opening your mouth again you should do some research. Oh wait, this is the internet and anonymous people just pull shit out of their ass to support whatever they think is right with no supporting evidence or thought behind it. Good job.
you do realize that this is happening

Dear "global warming" smartassses.1. Go
Dear "global warming" smartassses.
1. Go get a map.
2. Look at the map. See the big lake
off to the east of this area?
3. Look up the phrase "lake effect snow".
4. Now -- and I know this will be hard for you to follow, so I'll use small words and simple concepts -- try to figure out how much lake effort snow they'd be getting
if it were colder and the lake was frozen.
5. Now consider how much snow they are getting because it's warmer and the lake isn't frozen..which means there's open water...which is what you need to make lake effect snow.
6. Your remedial work will consist of some reading in basic meterology and shovelling out
one driveway in Oswego NY.
This is the result of a warmer than
This is the result of a warmer than average early winter - the lakes are not frozen. In a "normal" winter they would be frozen at this point and you would be getting little to no snow in these areas.
With that said - awsome pics - thanks for assembling them. You can find more on flickr if you search for oswego and snow

Can't tell if those "Global Warming"
Can't tell if those "Global Warming" comments were meant to be sarcastic or not, but anyone who knows a bit about it will understand that Global Warming may very well be responsible for this.
According to the news stations, all this snow is falling because the unseasonably warm weather has prevented the lake from freezing. Now the wind is picking up more water vapor than it normally should. Hence, the snow.
I'm not a climatologist or meteorologist, but the logic seems sound.
THANK GOD I live on the east
THANK GOD I live on the east coast!
Please, its been "proven" exactly as
Please, its been "proven" exactly as rigorously as global warming that all of the greenhouse gasses that we've been releasing have prevented the world from falling into an ice age. Maybe we should blame the government for cutting back on emissions!

Obviously none of you live in upstate
Obviously none of you live in upstate NY.....although global warming is real and warmer temps never help. Lake Ontario is too deep to freeze over comlpetely and thus the lake effect machine never stops in upstate NY. Lake erie freezes over in Jan and thats when buffalo's snow stops....but upstate NY continually gets hammered by snow from the lake throughout march and april
Yes, the beginning of the winter was
Yes, the beginning of the winter was very warm, but its been incredibly cold since then (I live near New York, and its been at least 3 weeks since we last hit the freezing mark)
So, I'm surprised the lake hasn't completely frozen yet. Water is stubborn like that.
But anyway... Buffalo always gets this kind of snow, its just usually not all in one batch. Global warming and El Nino really have nothing to do with it.

It's not because the medias talk about it everyday that everything happens because of it.
BTW it's El Nino's fault.
Global warming? Global cooling? The
Global warming? Global cooling? The earth goes through warming and cooling cycles. It has nothing to do with greenhouse gases, it's just mother nature, planet alignment and the earths orbit based on the alignment of those planets. Figure out which band wagon you want to ride, 20 years ago it was the cooling wagon, now its the warming wagon. 10 years from now, it will be the cooling wagon once again.......

Damn, thats a lot of snow. But its not like this is the first time it has ever snowed like that on this planet, but if anyting happens in New York it seems like they think they are special.
Where I am from Lake Effect snow is a common thing int he winter and blizzards like this while rare, do happen every few years or so. I think the real problem here is that they do not have the equipment (plowtrucks, etc..) to deal with it, thats why they were hammered so badly.
wow, more pictures please?
wow, more pictures please? :)

I'm not sure if the poster from Syracuse gets out much. I also live in the 'cuse (which does NOT get the most snow in the US, we get on average 12' per year). Oswego is about 60 min north of here. Some towns are not reporting over 140" of snow in total for the storm.
One nice thing about the lake effect snow is that it is light and fluffy...not in these amounts, though.
if you think that's bad look up some
if you think that's bad look up some archives of southern manitoba winter of 96/97. then look up the aftermath flood it caused that spring. average snowfall in southern manitoba is between 1 to 3 feet ftw (about 10 of them a year).
One of the biggest mistakes people have
One of the biggest mistakes people have made in covering this story is to describe it as an Upstate NY storm.
Lake effect snow is very similar to the snow machines you see at your local ski resort. When the machine is pointed at you the snow piles up. Clearly this was an unusually large amount of snow to receive in such a short period of time, but it effected a very small population base (the town of Mexico NY has 5,000 people and Redfield - the town with 12' of snow - has 600 people). The only two cities in the area were largely unaffected - Syracuse is 30 miles south of the snow band and received very little snow from the storm. Watertown is 50 miles north of the band and rec'd 15-20" of snow. I am 25 miles north of Watertown and I have areas of grass sticking up all around my yard.
Great pictures though.
For those of you from Syracuse stop
For those of you from Syracuse stop trying to say you get the most snow fall in the US. The ski towns of the Rockies that average greater than ~300" per year for those of you who can not do that conversion thatis ~25 feet of snow.
Hate to break it to ya folks, but the
Hate to break it to ya folks, but the Kootenay mountains in BC, Canada get the most snow annually......1000+ inches.
Thats over 85 feet of snow a year.

I stand corrected... "Syracuse is known
I stand corrected... "Syracuse is known for its snowfall. Boasting 115.6 inches on average, the Syracuse metro area receives more snow on average than any other large city in the United States." (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syracuse%2C_New_York#Climate) Sorry, I'm not really an Syracusean, I'm a New Yorker and of course this upstate snow is more than it seems.
Ironically we're getting buried in snow as I type (snowing for 24 hours now).
Again, when and where exactly are these pictures from?
